Provided below are questions frequently asked by students, parents, and community members about unrecognized fraternities and sororities. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Office of w88 mobile and Sorority Life at (775) 682-6846 or greek@unr.edu.
The University is concerned for the health and safety of all students who consider joining an unrecognized w88 mobile or sorority, specifically because unrecognized organizations do not have local, professional staff working directly with them. Additionally, the institution is concerned for the academic success of all members of unrecognized organizations, as those fraternities and sororities have no way of checking or monitoring grades for individual members or the chapter as a whole. Unrecognized organizations are not obligated to follow the University of Nevada, Reno's credit requirement, which requires all active w88 mobile and sorority members to be enrolled in 12 credits and be considered a full-time student at the institution, which can gravely affect chapter members in meeting their expected graduation date. Unrecognized organizations are also not obligated to follow University of Nevada, Reno policies and expectations. As a result, the institution is unable to hold local, unrecognized chapters accountable for misconduct or policy violations. Instead, the University is solely able to hold individual members and students accountable for Student Code of Conduct violations. Lastly, the institution is concerned that individuals that join an unrecognized w88 mobile or sorority will have an extremely different student experience compared to members of University-recognized organizations. Unfortunately, unrecognized fraternities and sororities are unable to participate in Homecoming or Greek Week, as well as other w88 mobile and Sorority Life or University-sponsored events and activities.
University-recognized fraternities and sororities are supported by the University of Nevada, Reno and have access to a variety of resources and services. Their affiliation with the institution allows them to utilize space on campus at no cost, partake in leadership development, philanthropy and service opportunities, academic and professional development, health and safety education, and other programs provided by the Office of w88 mobile and Sorority Life and other University departments. Additionally, University-recognized fraternities and sororities often have access to funding provided by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) and can collaborate with other University-recognized student organizations and University departments.
Unrecognized fraternities and sororities do not have any of the privileges that w88 mobile-recognized organizations have earned. In many cases, these fraternities and sororities may seem to operate like w88 mobile-recognized organizations, but they are NOT affiliated with the w88 mobile of Nevada, Reno. When fraternities or sororities choose not to seek w88 mobile recognition, they are no longer eligible for the same opportunities or resources that the campus provides to w88 mobile-recognized organizations. Additionally, these organizations are not obligated to follow the w88 mobile of Nevada, Reno policies and regulations.
