The w88 online game, Reno has once again retained its R1 designation – “Research 1: Very High Spending and Doctorate Production" for 2025. Recognized by the American Council on Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation (Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching), the designation reaffirms the University’s place among the nation’s top research universities, and reflects its commitment – as the state’s original land-grant university – to high-impact research and doctoral education.
The w88 online game, Reno first reached the prestigious Carnegie “R1” or “Very High Research” classification in December 2018, then again during the Carnegie Classification’s update cycle for 2021, officially announced in 2022.
The designation is based on research expenditure data reported by institutions through the National Science Foundation HERD Survey for fiscal years 2021-2023, and the number of research doctorates reported on the IPEDS Completions Survey for the academic years 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23.
Since fiscal year 2013, the University’s research expenditures have increased by 124%, hitting a record 4 million in 2024. In 2023, the University awarded 190 doctoral degrees, supported by 632 faculty members, and 261 post-doctoral researchers and non-faculty research staff holding doctoral degrees. The current threshold for an R1 institution is million in total annual research spending and awarding 70 research doctorates annually.
Expanding its impact around the globe, since 2016, University researchers have collaborated and partnered with more than 100 countries and more than 1,735 institutions.
“The R1 designation is more than a designation – it’s a reflection of the University’s continued commitment to excellence, innovation, and global impact,” Mridul Gautam, vice president for research and innovation, said. "From advancing AI for speech and language disorders to improving earthquake resiliency through cutting-edge engineering, our R1 designation supports transformative research that changes lives.”
The University’s R1 designation supports goals such as attaining AAU membership, enhancing student recruitment, improving faculty retention and increasing economic impact.
