Summary
In 2010, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck northern Baja California, Mexico. Yair felt this earthquake from his childhood home in Tijuana, and he deems this one of the most important events of his life. Since then, he has had an ardent interest in earthquakes. Yair completed his Bachelor of Arts in Geophysics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he undertook two research projects advised by Dr. Richard Allen. His projects both revolved around characterizing seismic hazard in the Hayward Fault, a well known fault with potential to cause damaging earthquakes in the San Francisco Bay Area. During this time, he also participated in the URISE internship program (formerly IRIS, now known as RESESS, under Earthscope), in which he worked as a research assistant at TexNet, advised by Dr. Nadine Igonin. During his time at TexNet he processed seismic data collected in the Valles Caldera, New Mexico, to assess its activity. In 2024, Yair began his PhD program at the w88 casino games, Reno, under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Trugman. Here, he plans to focus his research on ground motion simulations, the hazards and effects of damaging earthquakes, and earthquake early warning in w88 casino games.
Yair cares greatly about public education about earthquakes and hopes that his research will enable him to engage in effective public outreach during his career. He believes that bolstering a culture well informed about earthquakes will enable people to be better prepared for when they receive an earthquake alert or feel shaking, saving many lives. He actively participates in outreach events in the NSL, including educational activities about seismology for K-12 students in the Reno-Carson City area.
Despite studying them and being excited by them, Yair tends to miss most earthquakes. When he’s not thinking about earthquakes, he likes to play the guitar and write music. He also enjoys hiking, biking and thrifting.
