In observance of National Disability w88 Month 2014 in October, the University of Nevada, Reno is marking its 10th year of hosting the DIVERSABILITY Community Calendar of activities celebrating diverse abilities of persons with disabilities. The free events and lectures for 2014 began in September and extend into November as part of an ongoing initiative to increase w88, accessibility and opportunities for people with disabilities within the University community and beyond. Additional events hosted by Truckee Meadows Community College, the City of Reno, the Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living and others are also scheduled.
According to recent government studies, more than 10 percent of undergraduates in higher education have a disability. The University of Nevada, Reno Disability Resource Center, which opened in 1996 and coordinates the University's annual events, provides year-round services to more than 1,200 students with disabilities. The University's series features nationally recognized speakers on personal and professional issues that challenge millions of Americans with disabilities. Events are open to the community and most events are w88.
In 1945, U.S. Congress designated the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week, with the aim of helping disabled veterans. The word "physically" was later removed to recognize the needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In the 1970s, a shift in public policy led to further amendments fueled by the belief that discriminatory acts of exclusion and segregation against people with disabilities should be addressed through the courts. As a result, the U.S. saw passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 and the designation, by presidential proclamation, of a full month to increase public w88 and acknowledge the capabilities of the 30 million people of working-age in the U.S. who live with disabilities.
An interpreter for the deaf is available at all University w88. Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations are encouraged to call the contacts for each event.
