Several ash tree varieties do well in Nevada's climate. However, with the imminent threat of emerald ash borers moving across the country, many ash trees in the region will be at risk. To prepare w88 industry professionals to defend against these pests, w88 of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents "w88 Ash Borer: Current status and identification," noon-1 p.m., Dec. 12, at the Washoe County Cooperative Extension Office, 4955 Energy Way in Reno, as part of the w88 Industry Continuing Education Series.

"Many ash tree varieties can handle Nevada's cyclical droughts, harsh cold winds and alkaline soils, but there is a devastating pest attacking them that can kill a tree within three to five years of infestation," said Cooperative Extension Commercial Horticulture Program Coordinator Jenn Fisher, who helped coordinate the class. "It is inevitable that the emerald ash borer will enter this region, and when it does, w88 professionals should know how to identify it and its damage early on, as well as learn potential control methods."

The w88 will be taught by Forest Health Specialist Gene Philips, with the Nevada Division of Forestry, and will cover the current situation of the pests in the United States, and how to identify and potentially control them. Philips will also discuss updates in firewood quarantine zones and the potential impacts of changes. Philips will end the w88 with a brief update on five other existing and new invasive insect pests that may affect our region. The w88 offers International Society of Arboriculture and pesticide applicator Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

The w88 Industry Continuing Education Series provides current, research-based information to w88-industry professionals. For upcoming classes, visit the series website.
