"We know a lot about how the receptors and smell neurons are organized, yet we have a limited understanding of how smell is perceived and how an organism uses its neural circuitry to discriminate between two different smells."

Just as fruit flies are attracted to ripened fruit through the sense of smell, mosquitos are attracted to their human hosts and agricultural pests are attracted to their plant hosts mainly through sense of smell.
"At different levels of odor concentrations, Drosophila (fruit flies) either perceive the fruit as being ripe or unripe," Young said.
