The Campus Vote Project is an organization that works to compile best practices from universities across the country to help students register and vote in both local and national elections. While Associate Director of Student Engagement Amy Koeckes said that the upcoming election was certainly a motivator for applying for the designation, the need for civically minded and engaged students and graduates to become integral members of the nation's democracy was the biggest consideration when applying for the designation.
"I think getting students politically engaged sets them up to become active citizens within their community," Koeckes said. "If we can encourage students to become actively involved in college, the hope is that they'll continue to be actively involved in their communities and fight for the issues closest to them. Maybe they're going to run for a school board, maybe they're going to sit on a committee in their local government or maybe they'll become activists for the topics that they care about most."
The question often remains, why do young voters consistently fall behind in numbers during elections? According to the Campus Vote Project, one of the main impediments to a democratically engaged youth is a consistent lack of knowledge from missing deadlines to simply not knowing how to register.
