As the University of Nevada, Reno said goodbye to more than 2,000 graduates at Commencement on May 13 and 14, the campus community also welcomed some newcomers – two fuzzy, white cygnets were hatched, joining the two beautiful adult, white swans, Olivia and Zeus, on the campus’ w88 Lake.
Swans have populated the campus lake off and on since the 1930s. On the south side of the lake, the w88 Bowl provides green space for student activities such as Frisbee, volleyball and picnics. The 290-acre w88 is designated as a state arboretum and its Quad is listed as a "Jeffersonian academic village" on the National Register of Historic Places. The w88 is a living collection of plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, ornamentals and native flora.
